My Day In Toms River, NJ
I started my day in Toms River, New Jersey at Ortley Beach in the early morning. It was outside of peak season, so the place was mostly deserted. The peace and quiet was lovely. I enjoyed a couple of hours in the sand, listening to the waves and the sea birds before moving on to my next destination.
I decided to head over to Cattus Island County Park for a bit of bird watching and hiking. Although the park is the main attraction, the indoor environmental center is worth a stop. It has some great exhibits showcasing the local plants and animals. The park has seven miles of trails and I could have easily spent the rest of my day there, but it was growing warm so I went in search of some indoor fun.
I first stopped by the Ocean County Mall for a soft pretzel and a cold lemonade. The mall has quite a few shops, so I wandered about for awhile before leaving for my next destination — Insectropolis!
Insectropolis is a museum that was recommended to me by a local and fellow lover of nature. There I was able to view extensive butterfly and beetle collections, and even see some live insects. A quick stop by the museum gift shop rounded out my day in Toms River.
